A multidisciplinary approach to improve the quality of organic wheat-bread chain Organic Eprints
Abecassis, Joël; David, Christophe; Fontaine, Laurence; Taupier-Létage, Bruno; Viaux, P..
The main challenge for organic farmers, millers and bakers is to fulfill consumers’ expectations of providing healthy and safe products. The quality of organic grain can be modulated by agronomic modifications on genotypes, crop management, crop rotation and soil fertility, but the milling process and finally the baking process are also key factors in producing bread of high baking quality, nutritional value, taste and flavour. Nitrogen (N) is a key nutrient in achieving acceptable yield levels of sufficient bread-making quality, but previous results have shown that organic wheat tends to have lower protein content, dough mixing tolerance and loaf volume. The selection of genotypes with high N use efficiency, weed competitiveness and disease resistance...

Acting against common bunt: exploration of various control methods Organic Eprints
Fontaine, Laurence; Robin, N.; Bruyère, J.; du CHEYRON, P..
Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida) is a fungal disease with a large ability to spread. Consequences may be rejection of grains for sale or even a large decrease of yield. Different trials were carried out in organic farming in a research project (funded by the French Ministry of Agriculture between 2008 and 2011) to achieve a better control of common bunt. Results confirm that the resistance of wheat cultivars is a factor to consider. Despite most varieties currently cultivated in organic farming are sensitive to common bunt, some cultivars appeared to be resistant to the races tested. Concerning seed treatment, no product is available for organic farming and 100% efficient; but several solutions have been identified. Only one product is...

Choosing cover crops for arable crop rotations Organic Eprints
Casagrande, Marion; Fontaine, Laurence.
The tools aim at highlighting the main technical challenges as well as the ways and means of reflection, which can improve the understanding and the implementation of direct sowing into vegetal cover in organic agriculture. Practical recommendation First step: Determining the constraints Considering constraints with regard to suitability of cover crops helps to narrow the number of potential plant species. A first selection refers to the main crops, the intercropping period, dates of sowing and the soil type. Second step: Ranging objectives In a second step, applicable objectives are selected from a proposed list. The species that are best suited to meet the objectives are selected. Third step: Adapting cover crop management In a third step, the...

Contribution to organic breeding programmes of wheat variety testing in organic farming in France Organic Eprints
Fontaine, Laurence; Rolland, Bernard; Bernicot, Marie-Hélène.
Bread winter wheat is one of the most important cash crops for French organic farmers. Nevertheless, most of varieties available on the market were bred for conventional farming systems (with high inputs of mineral fertilizers and chemicals for crop defense). In order to obtain correct levels of yield and quality, it is important i) to screen current varieties to find the best suited for organic conditions, and ii) to rapidly obtain suitable varieties that are specifically bred for organic farming conditions. Bread wheat variety trials under organic conditions have been coordinated since the year 2001, to centralize and evaluate results at national level. The ringtest not only aims to compare varieties, but also to support organic breeding, as it provides...

Design and multicriteria evaluation of regionalized test cases in organic crops without animal production Organic Eprints
Garnier, J.F.; Fontaine, Laurence; Lubac, Stanislas; Bouviala, M..
What are the performances of different stockless organic crops systems? And more specifically, are there rotations more efficient than other for economic, technical and / or environmental criteria? This work aims to present the method of co-construction of simulated cases for an evaluation of economic, environmental and technical performances, at rotation and production system scale. Fifteen «test cases» have been defined in the partner regions of CASDAR projects ROTAB and ProtéAB and evaluated with a set of quantitative and non-aggregated indicators (tool Systerre ®). The results provided many references at different scales. In the current context, profitability was ensured for all cases studied, but the production environment had a major impact on the...

From selection to cultivation with the support of all stakeholders: first registration in France of two bread wheat varieties after VCU in organic farming system Organic Eprints
Rolland, Bernard; Fontaine, Laurence; Maillard, Aurélie; Oury, François-Xavier.
As bread wheat is the most important cash crops for French organic farmers, the question of the kind of varieties farmers should be using is therefore very important. Most of varieties available were bred for intensive “conventional” farming systems (with high inputs of mineral fertilizers and pesticides), also screening current varieties for organic conditions becomes a necessity to identifiy suitable varieties for organic farming conditions in a short term experiment. After 20 years of selection and screening combined in two different crop management systems, low inputs and organic, two lines, Hendrix and Skerzzo, have been registered in the official catalogue with the special mention « organic farming ». For the second year of seed production, 150...

Les CIMS pour améliorer la productivité en Agriculture Biologique dans les systèmes de culture assolés Organic Eprints
Charles, Raphael; Wendling, Marina; Büchi, Lucie; Casagrande, Marion; Celette, Florian; Fontaine, Laurence; Jouany, Claire.

Monitoring weed regulation services by carabids Organic Eprints
Casagrande, Marion; Fontaine, Laurence; Castel, Laurie.
Preparing the seed cards • Prepare 10 sand paper cards (5 cm x 5 cm) per field and 10 predator exclusion cages with 1 cm squared metal net to avoid predation by mammals and birds. • Glue 10 poppy seeds on each card and place each card within an exclusion cage. Data collection • Collect data twice during the crop cycle, preferably in spring for winter cereals (avoiding drought periods). • Define two transects in the monitored field. Place 5 seed cards with exclusion cage along each transect and nail them into the floor (day D). • Remove them after 4 days of exposure to predators • Count the remaining seeds on each card.
